I mentioned on my Instagram that I wasn’t putting the Christmas tree up this year. Henri (who’s about 6 months now) is an exceptionally active kitty relentlessly in the pursuit of food or play. A decorated tree would be endless fun for him, daily stress for me. Instead of a tree I wanted to make a couple of low cost, homespun decorations to celebrate the season. Paper garlands (like the construction paper ones I remember making in elementary school) immediately came to mind: they’re nostalgic, easy and cheap.
This is not a tutorial per se. I didn’t keep track of everything but I did want to document and share how I made them in case this could be helpful to anyone.
I used Canson Mi-Teintes because I already had a stash of it and it’s very similar to construction paper in terms of weight and flexibility. I used Sage Green, Lily White, Chestnut Brown and Dawn Pink (which I wish was a little darker as it appears similar to the white in low light). Each piece is 9.25” long by 1.5” wide (23.5cm x 3.8cm). I block printed the green strips with gold stars. And the white paper was stamped with dots before I cut it into strips.
I closed the rings with a stapler and I connected them in batches: first I would staple close all of the green loops. The add a brown loop to each green one. Then add a white loop to the brown one of each pair. Lastly I connected all of the groups with the pink strips keeping the color order consistent (of course you can place colors randomly or in any order you’d like).
I used gold and white twine to string up some brass bells and used the extra long ends to secure the garland. The string is tied around tiny, tiny screws I installed in the top of the moulding. I draped a garland and string of bells to 2 doorways in the living room, one to the hall and one to the kitchen. The effect is subtle but elevates the room out of the everyday.
Henri caught noticing the garland for the first time.
And, oh look, there’s Edie waiting for her food.
